Atsushi Sato is a top-ranked ekiden runner for Chugoku Denryoku. He set the former university student marathon record of 2:09:50 while at Waseda University. An injury kept him from running the 2007 London Marathon, but he came back with a strong fall season, setting the Asian half marathon record at the World Road Running Championships in Udine, Italy in October and then running the all-time 4th-fastest Japanese marathon time at the Fukuoka International Marathon in December. On the strength of his Fukuoka run Sato was selected for the Japanese men's marathon team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but despite the two runners who beat him in Fukuoka finishing 1st and 4th, Sato finished last.
