At the 2004 Olympic Trials – Men’s Marathon, Sell boldly took the lead but later faded and failed to make the U.S. Olympic team. The story in 2007 was entirely different as Sell found himself in fourth place before passing Dan Browne 1:51:45 into the race on November 3 en route to a third place finish at the 2008 Olympic Trials – Men’s Marathon in New York’s Central Park. Sell won the 2006 USA Half-Marathon Championships with his win in the new personal best time of 1 hour 2 minutes 39 seconds, which bettered his previous best time set in 2005 by 20 seconds. Sell's marathons include a fourth place at Boston and sixth in Chicago, where he posted a new personal best of 2:10:47. Sell led Team USA to a fourth-place finish at the 2005 Marathon Cup in Helsinki with his ninth place finish. Sell also ran in the 2004 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, finishing with a personal best of 2:13:18. He was one of three Hansons-Brooks Distance Project athletes on the 2005 IAAF World Championships marathon team. In May, 2005 he won his first USA title at the USA 25 km Championships in Grand Rapids, Mich., (1:15:27), the seventh fastest 25 km time ever for an American. He also has numerous top-ten finishes in USA Championships and international races, including a second-place finish at the 2005 USA 10 Mile Championships (47:37) and a ninth-place finish (first U.S.) at the 2005 Lilac Bloomsday Run.
