Glenn Brenner (1948-1992) was a Washington, DC based television sportscaster who died following his completion of the 1991 Marine Corps Marathon.
Glenn began his career as an athlete, a baseball player with the Philadelphia Phillies’ organization, before moving into broadcasting. After stops in his hometown of Philadelphia, Huntington, WV, and Millville, NJ, Glenn came to Washington’s WUSA-TV, channel 9, in 1977. For the next 14 years, Glenn laughed and cried with athletes of all shapes, sizes, and abilities. All sportscasters enjoy interviewing a famous athlete, but Brenner's interviews with little leaguers and fans on the street were always done in a professional, yet sympathetic manner.
Brenner decided to run both the 1990 and 1991 Marine Corps Marathon with a camera crew interviewing him at various points along the route. As he finished the 1991 Marine Corps Marathon, he waived off the camera crew because he was suffering from what the station characterized as a "vascular event" (i.e. a stroke), which later proved to be caused by an inoperable brain tumor. He remained off the air for the following months until his death.
For several years following his death, WUSA-TV sponsored the Glenn Brenner 5K which started outside its offices in Northwest Washington.
