The Honolulu Marathon is a 26.2 mile road race conducted the second Sunday of each December in Honolulu, HI, by the Honolulu Marathon Association. The first race in 1973 had 151 finishers, but it has grown to 27,827 registrants in 2007.[1] A non-competitive 10K fun run/walk is also held. The race does not cap the field size or impose qualifying times.
The race uses transponder timing. In 2007, SAI Timing System had a malfunction, resulting in lost times at the start, various split locations and at the finish. However, the race reviewed video tapes taken at the finish line and reconstructed missing 2,400 finish times. The race announced a shift to a different transponder timing vendor in 2008.[2]
