Here are some pointers for running in hot weather.

  1. Drink plenty of fluids. Drink before you get thirsty, up to three quarts per day. Use sports drinks as well as plain water to avoid hyponatremia.
  2. Avoid the hotest conditions. Run early in the morning or late evening and select shaded running routes. Generally, the humidity is the highest in the morning. The high moisture content makes it harder to breath, so one may consider doing a hard workout in the late afternoon (when there is less humidity).
  3. Adjust your pace. Start out more slowly and try to maintain a steady pace both during training and races. Assume that you will have to run a minute per mile slower due to the heat. Also, in hard workouts with prescribed paces, the times may need to be adjusted for the temperature.
  4. Wear cool clothing. Wear light colors, including a light-colored hat.
