Julian Spooner has been the Head Men's Coach at Virginia Commonwealth University since 1993.
Spooner was born in London, England. He holds the pre-merger junior men's records for the Blackheath Harriers, Bromley in the 800m and 1500m, and the under 17 record for the 800m.[1] He won the British and European junior championships in the 800-meters before coming to the United States in 1978. While attending the University of Richmond, he earned All American status five times and was the top-ranked 800-meter runner in the world as a freshman.

The climax of his collegiate career came in 1981 when he anchored a four-man, two-mile relay team which set a world indoor record at the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden in New York City. That same year his Richmond relay team captured the NCAA Championship. In 1980-2, his teams set the school record for the 4x880 yrd indoor relay; the indoor distance medley relay; the outdoor 4 x 15,000m relay; and the outdoor 4 x mile relay.[2]
He graduated from the University of Richmond with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in physical education. Coaching careerHe has been honored twice as CAA Coach of the Year. In his first 15 years at VCU, he has guided the VCU men’s and women’s teams to a combined seven conference championships and nine individual All-Americans. External links |
