Larry Steinke is the coach of University of Lethbridge and coaches Chinook Track and Field Club in Lethbridge, Alberta.

He competed in javelin and shot put at the 1994 Commonwealth Games.[1]

Steinke was named Athletics Alberta's Outstanding Athlete of the Year and was nominated for this award four times in his throwing career. He has won more than 28 provincial championships in Shot Put and javelin and continues to compete on a regular basis as a masters athlete and is presently the Canadian record holder in javelin.[2]

Coaching career

Since 1998 Steinke's athletes have accounted for 15 national team appointments, 5 Canadian records, won more than 100 provincial medals, accounted for numerous provincial team appointments, as well as numerous national championship medals. As head coach of the University of Lethbridge since 1999 his athletes have won 12 CWUAA Championships medals, 5 CIS national championship medals, and 5 athletes have been named All-Canadians.[2]

Steinke was a part of the 2008 Canadian Olympic Team coaching staff. He has previously coached the national team for events like the World Championships, Francophone Games, and at the 2007 Pan American Games in Brazil. He is best know for coaching Jim Steacy, the first Canadian hammer thrower to compete at the Olympics since 1924.[3]

Steinke is nationally certified at level III in the throws and combined events, is working towards his level IV certification, and has been involved in track and field for 25 years.
