Zimbabwe first participated at the Olympic Games under that name in 1980, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then. Previously, Rhodesia had participated in the Games on three occasions since 1928. The nation has never participated in the Winter Olympic Games. Zimbabwean athletes have won a total of four medals: the surprise gold medal by the Zimbabwe women's national field hockey team in 1980, and Kirsty Coventry's three medals in swimming at the 2004 Summer Olympics. The National Olympic Committee for Zimbabwe was created in 1934 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1980.
